Position Overview
About the Position: Serves as Medical Technician at Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, Virginia This is a Direct Hire Solicitation
Duties
- Receive patient's specimens of blood, urine, stool, microbiological and viral cultures, tissue, body fluids and cytological specimens.
- Check that all specimens are properly and completely labeled.
- Prepare specimens for analysis, ensuring that the physiologic properties are maintained.
- Ensure timely distribution to laboratory sections of all specimens received.
- Perform and calculate manual cell counts and properly identifies abnormal and normal blood cell populations.
- Collect, test, and process donated blood into treatment specific components.
- Perform, evaluate and monitor the performance of routine and specialized test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques in accordance with established protocols.
- Prepare standards, controls, solutions, and reagents required for testing.
- Perform primary review of patient results.
- Identify unusual and/or discrepant values and initiates appropriate follow-up procedures to verify results.
- Verify correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks.
- Managing inventory priorities and prepare inventory reports
- Training new staff and draft/review SOPs
