Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Assisting with inpatient or outpatient medical records coding; 2) Performing basic review and analysis of records for completeness; AND 3) Utilizing standard classification manuals to identify diagnostic codes. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Health Information Technology or Health Information Management.. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages. Certified Professional Coder (CPC) and/or Certified Professional Biller (CPB) is highly preferred.
Position Overview
About the Position: Serves as Medical Records Technician (MRT), functioning primarily as an inpatient/outpatient records coder. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation.
Duties
- Assign specific codes to medical records, and sequence codes to accurately reflect the resources and procedures used in the care of the patients.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and third-party insurance requirements.
- Correlate operation codes with diagnosis codes to ensure the most descriptive code is selected.
- Code complicated medical records having diagnostic, surgical and therapeutic procedures that are identified as difficult to classify.
- Assure accurate coding of diseases, injuries, manifestations, operations, and nonsurgical procedures.
- Use specialized procedures and methods to correct and amend records.
- Perform quantitative analysis and check medical record for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Identify and document any incident which may denote a potential compensatory event or questionable breach of quality of care delivered.
