Position Overview
The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), Office of Inspector General (OIG) serves as an independent and objective unit within DOL. OIG is responsible for auditing, investigating DOL programs and operations to promote economy, efficiency and effectiveness in the administration of the programs; and to prevent and detect fraud and abuse in the programs and operations.
Duties
Make an impact while you learn, as a student volunteer. The Fall 2026 program offers students an opportunity to volunteer to support a program-based project that supports real federal missions, gains hands-on experience and valuable career-ready skills. This position is unpaid.
The Student Volunteer program, authorized by 5 CFR Part 308, enables Federal agencies to engage students in uncompensated work assignments that provide educational experience, career exploration and skill development. These assignments are designed to align with each agency's strategic priorities, offering participants practical experience within Federal operations while supporting the advancement of targeted initiatives.
The main goal of this project is to support and assist OIG Investigators, Auditors, Legal, IT Specialist and/or Human Resources:

Prepare and/ or review files, investigative reports or audits.

Conduct sensitive, complex reviews and investigations.

Analyze, visualize and optimize business processes using the platform's existing audit logs.

Prepare quality documents and keep information confidential.

Collect and analyze relevant information.

Plan and complete work assignments on time.

Communicate relevant and accurate information, clearly and concisely during formal and informal meetings.

Contribute to team efforts and assist team members to accomplish work goals.

Use various enterprise tools and technology to prepare and share documents.

Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements
All eligibility requirements must be met at the time of application.To be a Student Volunteer, you must meet the below eligibility requirements:
1. Be at least 16 years old; and 2. Be enrolled in or accepted to an accredited academic institution on an at least part-time basis.
*A transcript showing proof of current enrollment is required to be submitted with your application package. Prior to onboarding, proof of enrollment for the semester of your volunteer service is required to verify your eligibility status as a student. *The Ideal Candidate for the Student Volunteer (Unpaid Position). Basic knowledge research and writing skills to be able to research and prepare reports of their findings. The ideal candidate has excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate both effectively orally and in writing. Experience with office automation systems (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is desired.

Education
To qualify, you must be enrolled not less than half-time in an accredited trade school, technical or vocational institute, junior college, college, university, or other accredited educational institution. You also must be in good academic standing as defined by your institution. Attach a copy of your transcripts to your application package for verification.If you do not submit sufficient academic documentation necessary to demonstrate that you meet the eligibility described in this announcement, your application will be deemed incomplete, and you will be ineligible for further consideration for this vacancy.
An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university and vocational or technical institution.

If the student is not currently enrolled or is between academic programs, the student may have a brief interim period of not more than five months during which the student must demonstrate a bona fide intention of continuing to pursue a course of study immediately after the interim period has ended. This documentation may be provided through an official letter from the academic institution confirming the student's status as a continuing student, or similar documentation.
Conditions of Employment
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Actively enrolled at least half-time in an accredited educational institution (Trade school, technical or vocational institution, junior college, college or university).
- Be in good academic standing as defined by your institution.
- Continue enrollment in qualifying academic program for the duration of the volunteer service.
- Commit and agree to volunteer, 8-20 hours per week for a minimum of 90 days.
