Position Overview

This position is part of the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The incumbent will be responsible for all matters pertaining to Title 10 requirements portfolios: the Unified Command Plan (strategy), the National Military Strategy (strategy), the Chairman's Risk Assessment (assessment) and incidental support for Global Force Management (force management), Global Campaign Plans (planning), and Joint Military Net Assessment.

Duties

As a STRATEGIC ANALYST at the GS-0301-14 some of your typical work assignments may include:
  • Being a recognized expert in supporting joint planning, risk evaluation, and Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff program and budget recommendations to the Secretary of Defense.
  • Assisting in the preparation of Congressional testimony and other senior military members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) on matters of national strategy, contingency plans, and global posture.
  • Collaborating closely with the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD), the Services, and the Combatant Commands (CCMD).
  • Providing military decision makers with authoritative information forming the basis for decisions affecting current and future military strategy, plans, force employment, posture, and Joint Force options to mitigate strategic and military risk.
  • Authority and subject matter expert regarding national-level security strategies.
  • Managing inputs and contributions to diverse strategy and plan development cycles and reviews for the Combatant Commands, Services, Defense Agencies, and other departments and agencies of the United States government.

Qualifications & Requirements

You may qualify at the GS-14, if you fulfill the following qualifications:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the13 grade level in the Federal service:
  • Developing, supporting, and employing methodologies that provide comprehensive analysis of strategic and military risk.
  • Managing inputs and contributions to diverse strategy and plan development cycles and reviews for the Combatant Commands, Services, Defense Agencies, and other departments and agencies of the United States government and the Joint Staff.
  • Highly detailed understanding of the Joint Strategic Planning System, the Joint Operation Planning Process, Joint Risk Assessment Methodology, Joint Strategic Campaign Plan and Management and Review of Campaign and Contingency Plans.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.

2. SF50
  • All current and former civilian Federal employees must submit a copy of your MOST RECENT SF50 (Notification of Personnel Action) showing your tenure, grade and step, salary, and type of position occupied (i.e., Excepted or Competitive); or similar Notification of Personnel Action documentation, i.e., Transcript of Service, Form 1150, etc. This is also a requirement to verify your Time in Grade (TIG).
