Position Overview
This position is located at Chinle Service Unit, Facilities Department in Chinle, AZ. This position maintains, operates, and repairs major hospital utility systems and equipment, including hot water generators, low-pressure boilers, water treatment systems, emergency generators, air compressors, vacuum pumps, and related equipment that support utility services and environmental controls for the hospital.A REAL ID will be required beginning May 7, 2025, in accordance with 6 C.F.R. 37.5 (2021).
Duties
- Performs major equipment repairs by installing, connecting, and adjusting electrical and mechanical components.
- Performs hydrostatic tests and if all tests are satisfactory, places boiler in service. Tests and treats boiler water to maintain proper chemical levels, prevent corrosion, and ensure system efficiency.
- Maintains, operates, and performs minor repairs for 400 kilowatt emergency generator. Test generator under loaded conditions once a month, reads and records data including line loads amperes, operating voltage, and frequency to comply with The Joint Commission requirements
- Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on all equipment and records all work performed in accordance with the Indian Health Service Preventive Maintenance Programs.
- Work involved in these emergency situations may be in the trades of electrical, plumbing, heating, and air condition, carpentry work, and painting.
Qualifications & Requirements

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):

Although no specific amount of experience, education, or training is required, applicants must meet a minimum level of ability in relation to the position. Physical Requirements:
Make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where the pars of system/equipment worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places, therefore, stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling are frequently for longer periods of time. Works in cramped and confined areas such as interior of Air Handling Units and ground mechanical equipment located in the crawl space. Incumbent may frequently lift and carry tools and equipment weighing up to 23 kilogram (50 pounds) and occasionally items weighing more.
Working Conditions:
The work is usually performed indoors, where there is exposure to dust, dirt, escaping gases, chemicals, heat, steam, noise, and unpleasant odors. Occasionally, may work outdoors under adverse weather conditions. Incumbent is continually exposed to the potential for burns, electrical shocks, cuts, strains, bruises, and chemical irritations.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.

This position requires the successful completion of a federal background investigation as a condition of employment.
