English Language Proficiency: Pharmacy Technician candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Pharmacy Technician, GS-07.Experience: Candidates must possess one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Certification: For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either: (a) PTCB as a CPhT. OR (b) NHA as a ExCPT. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate ALL of the following KSAs: (a) Knowledge of pharmacy technician principles, practices, concepts and theories providing for sound independent work. (b) Knowledge of the computerized prescription process and input of prescriptions and medication orders or electronic equivalent. (c) Ability to resolve pharmacy/medication issues with other members of the healthcare team, Veterans and external customers. (d) Ability to train developmental pharmacy technicians and students. (e) Ability to dispense medication or sterile products following all regulations, policies and procedures to ensure safe medication distribution. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-7. Physical Requirements: Work is primarily sedentary but may involve prolonged standing and/or walking. In performing day to day activities, the incumbent will experience repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., use of computer keyboard and mouse, operating office equipment, etc.) May require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40lbs).

Position Overview

The Pharmacy Technician is accountable to the Supervisory Pharmacy Technician or designee, works as part of an autonomous team, and uses independent judgement to perform a wide range of duties. All assigned functions and duties will be completed in accordance with approved MbM policies and procedures. The incumbent is expected to acquire and maintain a high degree of accurate productivity and performance.

Duties

  • Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Duties may include but are not limited to: Receives telephone calls from Beneficiaries, Caregivers, and others through the automated call distribution system. Answers inquiries regarding a broad range of topics, including prescription status, medication refills, package tracking and medications available through MbM. Validates Beneficiary contact information, ensuring address is correct to avoid delays in prescription delivery. Processes prescription refill requests, sending electronic requests for prescription renewal when appropriate. Uses the highest level of customer service to provide patient education via telephone on the medication refill process, use of the automated refill line, use of the internet refill system, and general information such as electronic prescribing information for future new prescriptions. Receives packages containing medications returned to MbM. Contacts beneficiary to verify address and use of medication. Prepares mailing label for medications being shipped to beneficiary. Documents receipt, destination, and any other actions taken on returned medications in the electronic database. Handles problems/issues not resolved at the Call Center technician level. Contacts CHAMPVA beneficiaries utilizing community pharmacies to promote the advantages of utilizing their MbM benefit. Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience. Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
